How often should you have an eye test?

Optometrists throughout the UK recommend having an eye test a minimum of once every two years if you are between 16 to 59 years of age. However for different ages the frequency of eye tests varies.

Children under the age of seven should have their eyes tested every six months and then every year from seven years old until they are 16. It is crucial to ensure that these eye tests are carried out because it is during childhood and early adolescence that their prescription will often change and it is very common for children to develop myopia which can lead to headaches, decreased performance at school and tiredness.

Once a person reaches 60, they can continue to have their eyes tested every two years; however it may be essential to have an eye test more often than this. People over 70 years old will require an eye test every year as they are more prone to eye and health conditions.

As well as age playing an important factor in how often your eyes should be tested, there are also many other factors that need to be taken into account regardless of age.
People with diabetes should have their eyes tested every year as well as people with glaucoma. Also those who are 40 years of age with a close family history of glaucoma should have their eyes tested every year.
