Most eye care providers in the UK will charge for an eye test unless you are eligible for a free NHS eye test. However many eye care retailers offer discounts on their eye tests saving you up to 75%.
Tesco opticians however offer completely free eight sight appointments as of 2010. You cannot book online however you can go into your local Tesco opticians or call 0845 601 3479 to find your nearest Tesco opticians and book your free sight test appointment.
Certain people in the UK may be eligible for a free eye test with the NHS. The NHS understand how important it is to have your eyes checked at least once every two years in order to check your general eye health and also detect underlying and unknown diseases such which can cause blindness but can be prevented if caught early enough with an eye test.
In order to qualify for a free NHS eye test then you must fit one of the criteria mentioned below:
- Under 16 years of age
- Under 19 years of age and in full time education
- 60 years of age or older
- Have been diagnosed with glaucoma
- Are aged 40 years or older with an immediate family member who has been diagnosed with glaucoma
- If you are diabetic
- Registered blind or partially sighted
- If you or your partner receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- If you are claiming Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or another form of income support
- Have a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
- Have a valid NHS exemption certificate such as a HC2 or HC3 form
- People who require complex lenses
If you are a UK resident then you can get a free NHS eye examination in Scotland without fitting any of the above criteria. You can have your free eye test with an optometrist in Scotland if they provide NHS services (most high street opticians do). You do not need a GP referral; you will just need to make an appointment with your nearest NHS providing optometrist or call the NHS Helpline on 0800 22 44 88.
Where to have a free eye test?
As mentioned above, Tesco offer completely free eye tests for anybody who requires an eye test or a regular check-up. You can book the appointment for your nearest Tesco Opticians.
If you qualify for NHS free eye tests then you will find that the majority of high street opticians offer these such as Dolland & Aitchison, Specsavers, Boots and other major opticians. If you do qualify for a free NHS eye test then just give your local opticians a call to double check and then book your appointment.
